What’s the hottest self development technique at the moment?

It’s not a retreat, workshop or book!

Best of all – its free!

So what’s the new buzz?

As Lao Tzu said “knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself if true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power”.

Yes, getting to know yourself is the best thing you can do.

From there, you can really make changes that will enrich and enhance your life.

But how? you might ask

Well its Self Coaching.

Yes the new buzz is Self Coaching!

So how do you self-coach?

There are 3 skills you need:

Skill #1 – Becoming aware of what you are currently doing

The act of self-coaching cultivates the first skill which is about being an observer of your inner world – your thoughts and your emotions.

Knowing what you are feeling and thinking at all times requires a level of focused attention and self-awareness. It will also give you the power to change any negative thought or emotion that may come up for a positive, more empowering one.

This a crucial tool for yourself and will allow you to empower yourself to take more consistent, positive action in your life.

How will you do this?

There are many ways: meditation or sitting quietly, walking, listening to music. But the best is writing down what is in your head. The act of writing, free flowing and uncensored, allows you to see all your thoughts clearly. From there you can decide which thoughts are helpful, true and/or kind. In this way you can then start moving towards thoughts that serve you.

Skill #2 – Non-judgement

As a coach, I know that judgment triggers a whole lot of unhelpful elements including self-doubt, overthinking, fear, negative thought spirals, and second guessing.

So, the second skill of non-judgment, which arises through long-term self-coaching, creates deep mental clarity.

You’ll quickly and effectively set aside overthinking and uncertainty, and instead step into identifying powerful next actions and next steps for yourself.

This naturally leads to the third skill of self-coaching…

Skill #3- Choosing Responses

It is about choice.

Choosing conscious responses that work best for you and your specific situation, problem or challenge.

The truth is, most people go through life feeling forced, pushed or driven into reacting – not responding — to everything that’s happening around them.

This can lead to misunderstandings in your relationships as well as problems and challenges that could have been easily avoided.

And remember, you have 100% of the control over your thoughts, emotions, and actions.

That’s why choosing conscious responses, which is basically the ability to resist knee-jerk reactions to situations, experiences and people, is an invaluable skill for us all to have.

Therefore the 3 key skills of self-coaching are self-observation, non-judgment and choosing responses. Nurturing these skills and practicing them on a daily basis will guide your self-coaching journey to a place of clarity and self-awareness.

Clarity on what you want to achieve, where you want to go, how will you get there.

It will also pave the way for a life and business that works in congruence with your personal values , values and beliefs.

Keep in mind that there is nothing more dissatisfying or disappointing than to wake up one day and realise you have been living someone else’s life. That you have been working and striving to meet another’s goals, dreams and expectations. It could be those of your parent(s), boss or spouse.

We are at our best when our life and work are a refelction of our true self.

Self-coaching gives you the tools and knowledge to know your true and best self.
